Year 5/6 Forest School - Outdoor First Aid
We started off talking about outdoor first aid and how the children are at an age where they play out with their friends without their parents being around as much and how to keep safe. We talked about the number that we call when there is an emergency.
At first, the children exchanged experiences where they had needed First aid are needed to do first aid. We looked at the first-aid bag and the children investigated both the first-aid kit and burns kit and we talked about how we use each of the items. We looked at a tick fork and talked about insects that could harm us, as well as having tweezers that can pull out splinters. We also covered what to do if we get burnt.
The children were very interested and asked lots of questions. We then gathered around on the field to see what to do with an unconscious, but breathing person. We talked about finding our pulse and checking if somebody is breathing. The children got shown what to do when somebody is unconscious and how to put someone into the recovery position. The children then got into pairs and practiced on each other. The children took this very seriously and enjoyed role-playing the scenario.
We then had a go at making a makeshift stretcher. The children found sticks and rope along with tarpaulin. The children then had to improvise and make a stretcher for one of their friends. The children were shown how to roll the tarpaulin underneath somebody so they could carry them to safety. The children did a great job making stretchers and enjoyed carrying on each other around, they worked together as a team to ensure the person on the stretcher was carried safely.
