Hebden Royd Town Council Climate Cafe
On Friday 10th November, our Eco-Councillors from Year 5/6 joined other schools at Hebden Bridge Town Hall to form a coalition of schools in the Hebden Royd area to tackle the climate crisis.
The group worked with their peers from other schools to talk about the ecological challenges in their school, local area and Calderdale at large, and be part of Hebden Royd Town Council's inaugural School's Climate Action Group.
These sessions are co-ordinated by David Howes, town councillor for the West End ward who is also a primary school teacher, and Rachel Lightbird, HRTC's Climate Emergency and Biodiversity Coordinator.
The plan is for all schools to meet termly, and engage pupils around the area in a constructive approach to climate emergency and biodiversity crises, with all the schools having KS2 students working together, getting the right support so they can become more and more involved in the initiating, planning and delivery of what happens next. Hopefully, over time, working together will transform the approach of schools in this area to the climate emergency.
These sessions tie in very nicely with our on-going work for Eco-School and it gave our children a good idea of the positive work that they had done over the past year and also boosted their confidence as they were able to share ideas with their peers and support schools that haven’t yet started the Eco-School journey.
